M71
Globular Cluster in Sagitta
NGC 6838
Mag 6.1
GC
class X-XI
05/06/13
Small and faint but easy to find
In the Milky Way so a beautiful FOV
Almost Galaxy like, not resolved?
08/06/13
Faint but very beautiful
FOV is very attractive in 12mm, especially stars leading!
Hazy evening so everything rather washed out
Using 'neglected 18mm' on M71 and M13
View
really sharp of both
03/07/13
So
attractive! Hazy in 25mm, smoky in 18mm and starting to resolve
in 12mm
07/07/13
Keep
returning! Viewed in all eyepieces, even 7mm
Stunning
star field
04/08/13
Rather
smudgy and not resolved in 12mm, rather hazy?
31/08/13
Diffuse
and irregular against a dark background, wonderful!
03/09/13
Comparing
Globular Clusters
No real
core, fairly evenly sprinkled with stars which merge into
surrounding starfield
04/09/13
Sharp,
resolved and ragged in 12mm
There is a
'frosty' patch of starfield below which looks like an open
cluster, of which HIP 97796 and HIP 97818 are the brightest
06/10/13
So
beautiful. In 25mm appears to be in two sections
Observed
after M72 and M73 but so much easier!
04/11/13
Amazingly
rich starfield in which sits this floating cloud which is M71
17/06/14
Faint, almost wispy Globular Cluster with a hint of resolution
of the outer stars in 12mm
Sits in a beautiful starfield, is easy to locate and is one of
the gems of the summer sky!
20/06/14
Perfect but not resolved tonight, one day short of the longest
day in a still, clear sky
25/06/14
Couldn't resist taking a look since the sky is very dark and
clear and I've got a new focuser! perfect!
30/06/14
A faint, unresolved haze at 11:35 pm when still not quite dark,
however a beautiful starfield even so
20/08/14
With inverted vision in 12mm strings of tiny points of light
appear to run across the cluster, which is hazy and not really
resolved
21/09/14
Lovely, what can I say!
19/12/14
Not very well defined this evening but it is only early and
Sagitta is a setting constellation!
FOV rather light so M71 does not have a good contrast against
the background
09/07/15
Truly a gem of the summer sky
Sits in a classic constellation right in the heart of the
Milky Way and easily located
In the same rich FOV in 25mm as the very yellow 9 Sge, QZ Sge,
HIP 97796 at Mag 6.20
With 18mm a rich dark FOV with some brighter stars resolved,
more resolved in 12mm with inverted vision
Using Barlow to give 180x magnification M71 fills the whole
FOV, rather ragged and nowhere near as tight a ball as M13, in
fact now rather sparse but my favorite Globular Cluster among
many favorites!
19/07/15
Interesting FOV in 12mm with a bright asterism to the left of
the Globular Cluster
9 Sge, QZ Sge, HIP 97796 is
the topmost and brightest star in the asterism at Mag
6.20, the other stars are of Mags 7, 8 and 9 with HIP
97818 at mag 7.65 forming a neat triangle below 9 Sge
09/09/15
Rather washed out and not really resolved even in 12mm,
partly due to the hazy sky which still has sky glow even with no
Moon at 11pm and also because the telescope mirrors need
cleaning!
10/09/15
A beautiful sight in 12mm (telescope mirror now clean!) but
still not a very sharp sky so a bit hazy and washed out
06/08/16
Rather ragged and merging into the surrounding starfield
tonight, perhaps because it is rather hazy
Still, big, bright and impressive, if not the pincushion
Globular that it sometimes appears
07/08/16
Always a joy to observe, especially when the sky is as clear,
dark and sharp as tonight after midnight
Beautiful starfield in 12mm with M71 large and ragged with
numerous resolved stars
It appears to merge into the surrounding starfield, not a tight
ball like most Globular Clusters
26/08/16
Jumping between some of my favorite Messier objects before the
clouds roll in
M71 perfect as ever but having yesterday looked at M2, M15, C42
and C47 it is really apparent how loose and ragged M71 is, and
also what an amazing FOV it sits within in any eyepiece

22/10/16
Rather faint and washed out tonight, even though the sky appears
very sharp
However a very heavy dew which may have already affected the
optics!
